Staff Attorney

 

Qualifications:

Member of the Michigan bar or admissible under reciprocity. Candidate must demonstrate excellent legal and communication skills and a commitment to legal services for the poor. Must be bilingual (English and Spanish).

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Interviews applicants for legal services, advises and counsels individuals and groups regarding their legal rights, handles a reasonable caseload, conducts outreach and community education and development activities, and where necessary, engages in negotiation, trial and/or appeal of legal issues in state

and federal court that have substantial impact on the rights of eligible clients.

 

Summer Law Clerks

We have two paid and three unpaid positions available every summer for law clerks and we begin accepting resumes in October. Salary is DOE for paid positions.

We are currently taking applications for those positions.

 

Qualifications:

The duties and responsibilities of this position require an individual who is a

self-starter, quick learner, and very organized. You will be traveling throughout the state visiting migrant camps and various state agencies that also provide services for Migrants. The ability to speak Spanish is preferred but not necessary. The positions are primarily for the summer months, but help is needed in the fall and winter as well.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Interviewing clients and assessing their legal issues, developing material and a presentation to give to migrant farmworkers on their rights, researching legal issues specific to farmworkers and undocumented workers in many areas of law, drafting demand letters, memorandums of law, complaints and various

other pleadings in state and federal court, assisting attorneys with trial preparation, visiting migrant camps throughout the state of Michigan to do outreach to those who cannot come to us, work with state agencies and other organizations to provide a better system of services to the farmworker population, lobby for particular legislation affecting farmworkers and undocumented workers, and much more.
